New Jersey Carpenters Union: Putting More People into Good Union, Building Trades Jobs

The Big Idea:

●      The Eastern Atlantic States Regional Council of Carpenters (EASRCC) is committed to preparing the next generation of skilled construction workers through its certified carpenters union apprenticeship program. The EASRCC launched the Carpenter Apprentice Ready Program (CARP) to increase exposure to carpentry for populations traditionally underrepresented in the building trades. It is a unique initiative that aims to prepare women and minorities for a rewarding career in carpentry.

Background:

●      CARP is a free eight-weekend, pre-apprenticeship program covering carpentry fundamentals and related trades. Participants receive tutoring in basic math, professional development, and other essential skills for the construction sector. They also get hands-on experience with tools and materials and learn about safety and union benefits.

●      Union apprenticeship programs help prepare individuals for good-paying union jobs, at a fraction of the cost, and in a much shorter time frame than a classic four-year higher education degree.

●      Upon completion of the CARP program, students are eligible to enter apprenticeship programs with certified instructors.

Fun Fact:

EASRCC represents nearly 42,000 Union Carpenters across New Jersey, Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania, Washington D.C., Virginia, and West Virginia.

Their Take:

William Sproule

“The Carpenters Union is a leader in our communities and takes its role seriously in lifting up the working class by advocating for workers’ rights, increasing infrastructure investments, and promoting enrollment in certified apprenticeships. We work with industry partners, elected officials, and enforcement agencies to help create a level playing field for contractors and secure more work opportunities for union carpenters.”

-  William C. Sproule Executive Secretary-Treasurer for EASRCC
